On Motzei Shabbos, January 11th, the MTA Lions hosted the Ramaz Rams in a game that kept everyone on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer. In an intense back-and-forth battle, the Lions pulled out a clutch 55-53 victory, improving their record to an impressive 11-1 this season.
Ramaz came out of the gate hot, going up 12-0 before MTA finally got on the board on a putback by senior center Josh Treuhaft 5 minutes into the contest. The Lions closed the gap all the way down to 13-9 after one quarter.
MTA chipped the deficit down to 1, 15-14, but the Rams responded and went back up 7. However, the Lions closed the half on a monster 13-0 run in under 3 minutes, and headed into the locker room up 32-26.
The third quarter saw back-and-forth action, finishing with MTA up 44-37. The lead remained at around 7 points throughout most of the final period, and the Lions led 54-47 with 45 seconds remaining in the game. Ramaz made an impressive last-ditch effort, but it was too little too late, and MTA held on to win by 2.
Senior Jakey Abenaim led the way for MTA, dropping 17 points and dishing out 6 assists. He was unstoppable, slicing through the Rams’ defense and hitting some key shots down the stretch. Treuhaft was dominant in the paint, putting up 12 points, grabbing 8 rebounds, and adding 3 assists.
The juniors also stepped up big. Efraim Avramov scored 9 points, while Andi Richman and Gavi Engel chipped in 8 points each. Engel also snagged 6 rebounds, dominating the boards when it mattered most.
MTA will finish their regular season schedule by taking on Heschel on January 29th and hosting SAR on February 3rd.
